Donald Christ called the meeting to order 7.05 AM at the Ontelaunee Park pavilion and presided over discussions of the following topics to update the committee and “re-start” our fundraising and design activities since the COVID shutdown that began in mid-March.

  1.  MINUTES: The March 24, 2020 Minutes were accepted as written. M – Hughes, 2nd E Handwerk, Approved by all

2. TREASURER’S REPORT: The bank statement of July 23, 2020 for the Memorial account at New Tripoli National Bank shows a current balance is $24,640.26.

  1. WEBSITE: https://nwlehighvetsmemorial.org.

Names of Veterans submitted for engraving along with their service information can be viewed on the memorial website.

Our website is listed on the NWL school district site under the COMMUNITY tab on their homepage.

To date Nancy has loaded 1,811 names and sorted names by the war or era they served.  Following the guidance we got from Lehigh Valley Granite, about the number of names that can be engraved on a six foot tall panel, we should be OK with 11 two-sided granite panels, including quotations and three empty sides for future wars.  This layout would also provide more than 600 spaces to engrave names on the panels for future adds.

  1. QUOTATIONS for memorial panels:

The current list of historical, patriotic quotes to be engraved on the memorial panels was given to the committee members for their review and suggestions for additional quotes.  Harold Haas suggested that a quote about women in military service should be added.

W Dellicker suggested that the committee should vote to approve the final version of quotations when the time comes to place them on the appropriate granite panels.

To date we have 23 quotations and there are 22 engraved sides on the 11 granite panels.  This will provide one quote for each engraved side.

  1. VETERANS SIGN-UP DATE:

The committee, by unanimous consent, extended the deadline for accepting names to be engraved from July 4, 2020 to January 1, 2021 due to the COVID-19 interruption in our design and fundraising activities.

A note will be posted on our website homepage stating that the deadline for submitting names for the memorial will be extended.

  1. INFORMATION FOR CHURCHES:

Distribution has been delayed due to COVID.  The extension of the sign-up date to January 1 must be communicated to the church information.

  1. POST CARD MAILING:

A suggestion to do a post card mailing to update the community was discussed.  Chris Brown and Sandy Eckhart volunteered to create the message and include a picture on the post card.

Motion was made to approve by Haas, 2nd Hughes approved by all.

 8. RELOCATION OF THE DOA WWII MEMORIAL:

The relocation of the Daughters of America memorial has been completed and looks great in its new location.  There is an active Boy Scout, Eagle Scout project underway to place pavers from the sidewalk to the memorial to enhance its appearance and access to read the names.

 9. EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES:

Christ, Dellicker and H. Handwerk met with Blue Mountain Vineyards to discuss future fundraising events.

Eight Oaks distillery is also interested in sponsoring a fundraising event.

More information will come as plans are made.

 10. DISCUSSION:

Chris Brown said he will begin looking at how prep work could be started at the memorial site to do some preliminary grading in a way that would show some construction progress and drainage contours without creating additional work later on in the project.

The committee talked about letters to area corporations including outside the district such as Waste Mgt, LVHN, Air Products and Nestles asking for financial support.

The committee learned of an anonymous letter suggesting that non-resident school employees be included on the memorial.  The committee rejected the idea, restating our original intent to recognize only RESIDENTS of the four townships as described in our Rules for Engraving document.

ADJOURN: Motion by H. Haas, 2nd by H. Handwerk.
